Sound and Image

I just heard a really inspiring talk by Matthias Kispert on the use of sound in audio visual performance

He mentions quite a few things which i find quite relevant to the type of work I make

– A sense of place, how sound relates to place and to space

– the spatial perception of sound, the way we relate to different places through the sounds that we hear

– using sounds taken from the environment for creative production

– looking at sound as a phenomenon of perception and how that can be used in artist work

– site specific work  inside empty buildings with microphones, recording whatever they find there and improvisations

– one of the interesting things about the difference between sound and image is that sound is so much more ambiguous. You can record so many things and when you listen to it you just couldnt tell what it is. One of the interesting things is that you can combine so many different sounds with a visual and create various interpretations. For example in horror films if a head gets crushed they use the sound recording of a squashed watermelon.
